Canvas sent out an incident notification on Tuesday (8/20) indicating that the “Disallow Threaded Replies” setting for Canvas Discussions was enabled and locked-on to some discussions in all regions of the US. This kept Canvas users from being able to add threaded replies on discussions, and teachers and admins were also unable to modify the setting on their discussions to allow threaded responses. While Canvas Engineers implemented a fix to resolve the immediate issue, some discussions remained in a permanent state that prevented threaded replies.
At this time, there is no way to fix this issue except for creating a whole new discussion post where those legacy settings described above do not applied. Instructors may need to recreate future discussion posts that have been imported prior August 19, 2024, to counteract this hidden disable replies setting from being applied to the post. Faculty can test their Discussion Post by utilizing the Test Student feature in Canvas, make an attempt, and resetting their attempt.
CIRT is happy to assist any faculty! We encourage faculty to email cirtlab@unf.edu and provide your course information as well as a list of all discussions post affected. Or you can schedule an appointment using our Bookings Page.
