Respondus Monitor / Getting Started

Important Note: The Respondus Monitor proctoring feature is licensed strictly for use with Distance Learning (DL) courses. Do not use Respondus Monitor for Hybrid or F2F courses.
For additional information and questions concerning proctored exams or Respondus, please contact CIRT at cirtlab@unf.edu or 904-620-3927.

Summary

Monitor is a fully-automated proctoring solution; meaning that there are no live proctors with Respondus Monitoring. It starts with LockDown Browser, a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. Students cannot print, copy, access other applications, or search the internet during an online exam. When Monitor is enabled within the LockDown Browser dashboard, students are required to use a webcam to record themselves during an online exam. During the assessment, Respondus’ AI system, which uses Computer Vision Algorithms, reviews the recording and flags suspicious events. After the exam is submitted, the recording and corresponding report become available in the instructor’s LockDown Browser dashboard for further review.

After a quick one-time installation, Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor is launched by the student from their Desktop whenever the exam settings require it. The secure browser is synced to UNF’s Single-Sign-On system and automatically launches to the student’s dashboard in Canvas, where the student navigates to the exam as they normally would. Students are then guided through a pre-exam sequence, including a webcam check, student ID check, and environmental room scan before proceeding to the examination.

There’s no need to schedule a proctoring session in advance. Students and instructors don’t even have to register at the Respondus website. Everything is handled through Canvas.

Tips

Respondus Monitor and Respondus LockDown Browser are two separate components that work together to create a full proctoring system. While the Respondus Monitor piece is only licensed for use with Distance Learning (DL) courses, the LockDown Browser software can be used without the Monitor component and is available to all UNF courses.

If you are new to using Respondus Monitor, please contact CIRT (cirtlab@unf.edu) to schedule a consultation so we can walk you through the set up and test session review process.

Getting Started with Respondus Monitor

  1. Email cirtlab@unf.edu to request assistance with getting Respondus Monitor set up in your course.
  2. Include the following information in your syllabus:

This course requires the use of LockDown Browser + Monitor for online exams. LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. Respondus Monitor is a fully automated proctoring recording system that utilizes a student’s webcam and microphone to record the student’s environment while taking an examination. The webcam can be built into your computer or can be the type that plugs in with a USB cable. Download and install LockDown Browser from this link:https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=482833918

To take an online test, start the LockDown Browser application and navigate to the exam. (You won’t be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.) For additional details on using LockDown Browser + Monitor, visit the Respondus Student Support page.

When taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:

    • Ensure you’re in a location where you won’t be interrupted.
    • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc.
    • Clear your desk of all external materials – books, papers, other computers, or devices.
    • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test.
    • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted.
  1. Set up your exam(s) in Canvas; be sure to set a test availability window.
  2. Add LockDown Browser in your Canvas Course navigation, then enable the exam with Respondus Monitor using the options available in the Respondus Instructor Dashboard.
Click on Navigation. Find lockdown browser and drag it to the top. Scroll down and click save.

Set up a LockDown Browser + Monitor Practice Quiz

Ensure your first exam using LockDown Browser + Monitor runs smoothly! Have students take an ungraded practice quiz that requires the use of LockDown Browser + Monitor before the graded exam occurs.

Leave the quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again if they use a different computer.
