Summary
Monitor is a fully-automated proctoring solution; meaning that there are no live proctors with Respondus Monitoring. It starts with LockDown Browser, a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. Students cannot print, copy, access other applications, or search the internet during an online exam. When Monitor is enabled within the LockDown Browser dashboard, students are required to use a webcam to record themselves during an online exam. During the assessment, Respondus’ AI system, which uses Computer Vision Algorithms, reviews the recording and flags suspicious events. After the exam is submitted, the recording and corresponding report become available in the instructor’s LockDown Browser dashboard for further review.
After a quick one-time installation, Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor is launched by the student from their Desktop whenever the exam settings require it. The secure browser is synced to UNF’s Single-Sign-On system and automatically launches to the student’s dashboard in Canvas, where the student navigates to the exam as they normally would. Students are then guided through a pre-exam sequence, including a webcam check, student ID check, and environmental room scan before proceeding to the examination.
There’s no need to schedule a proctoring session in advance. Students and instructors don’t even have to register at the Respondus website. Everything is handled through Canvas.
Tips
Respondus Monitor and Respondus LockDown Browser are two separate components that work together to create a full proctoring system. While the Respondus Monitor piece is only licensed for use with Distance Learning (DL) courses, the LockDown Browser software can be used without the Monitor component and is available to all UNF courses.
If you are new to using Respondus Monitor, please contact CIRT (cirtlab@unf.edu) to schedule a consultation so we can walk you through the set up and test session review process.

Set up a LockDown Browser + Monitor Practice Quiz
Ensure your first exam using LockDown Browser + Monitor runs smoothly! Have students take an ungraded practice quiz that requires the use of LockDown Browser + Monitor before the graded exam occurs.
Leave the quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again if they use a different computer.
