Unlock Your Assessment Superpowers
with Canvas New Quizzes

There’s exciting news for UNF faculty, especially for all the instructors who have been asking about Canvas New Quizzes. We are thrilled to announce that the Online Learning Support team at CIRT has developed a New Quizzes roll-out plan, which will pave the way for the adoption of this powerful and versatile assessment tool.

What Is Canvas New Quizzes?

Canvas New Quizzes is a tool in Canvas that allows instructors to create and deliver online assessments to students. It is integrated with Canvas as an LTI tool and will eventually replace the Classic Quizzes functionality. New Quizzes boasts a plethora of features designed to enhance the assessment experience for both instructors and students. Here’s a sneak peek:

  • Intuitive Interface: Streamlined design simplifies quiz creation and management.
  • Variety of Question Types: Explore a wider range of engaging question formats, including drag-and-drop, matching, and equation editing.
  • Enhanced Grading Flexibility: New Quizzes introduces increased grading flexibility by enabling partial credit through the “vary points by answer” setting. This feature allows the assignment of different point values to various choices, offering a more nuanced assessment approach.
  • Streamlined Anonymous Grading: The process of anonymous grading has been made more accessible in New Quizzes. On the settings page, simply enable anonymity by checking the box labeled “Graders cannot view students’ names,” providing a straightforward way to maintain confidentiality during the evaluation process.
  • Enhanced Accessibility: Improved compliance with WCAG accessibility standards ensures inclusivity for all learners.
  • Detailed Feedback & Analytics: Gain deeper insights into student performance with richer feedback options and comprehensive analytics.

Why Adopt New Quizzes?

Full transparency, Instructure planned to turn off Classic quizzes last year, but they changed their plans after receiving some critical feedback from their partner universities. At the time, New Quizzes just wasn’t ready for production. However, Instructure has been continually improving the product in ways that put it in parity with their current offerings. We’re still very early in the process, but the new trajectory for full adoption is Fall 2025.

Planning for adoption is crucial for several reasons:

  • Ensuring Support: Adoption of a new tool like New Quizzes requires both technical and pedagogical readiness. Faculty need to understand how to use the tool effectively and align it with their teaching strategies. Staff at CIRT need to become experts in this tool, so that we can offer comprehensive training and support to faculty, ensuring a smooth transition and effective use of New Quizzes in enhancing student learning outcomes.
  • Minimizing Disruption: A well-planned adoption can minimize disruption to teaching and learning. It allows for adequate time for communication, documentation, training, testing, and gradual implementation.
  • Maximizing Benefits: To reap the full benefits of New Quizzes, faculty need to understand its features and capabilities. A planned adoption can include professional development opportunities to help faculty learn how to best use the tool.

CIRT’s Roll-Out Plan:

CIRT is committed to supporting a smooth transition to New Quizzes. Additionally, we will be readily available to address any questions or concerns, ensuring that faculty feel confident and supported throughout the transition process. Here’s a preview of what you can expect in the coming months:

  • Transparent Communication: We believe in keeping the lines of communication open. We’ll provide regular updates on the transition process, changes, and improvements, ensuring you’re always informed and prepared. We’ll be posting information about New Quizzes on this blog, in our regular email updates, on social media, and more.
  • Workshops & Training: We’ll be offering a series of workshops and training sessions to equip you with the knowledge and skills to master New Quizzes.
  • A New Quizzes Transition Portal: A comprehensive library of resources, including guides, tutorials, and FAQs, that will be readily available at your fingertips.
  • Dedicated Support: Our team of experts will be on hand to answer your questions and provide ongoing support throughout the transition.

This is just the beginning of the New Quizzes journey. Keep an eye out for future communication from CIRT, where we will delve deeper into specific dates and features, share valuable tips and tricks, and announce upcoming workshops and resources.

We are confident that New Quizzes will revolutionize your assessment practices, and we’re here to support you every step of the way!
